Advanced Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery physician Dr. Goldenberg and the two other physicians were recently interviewed for a feature story in the Danbury News-Times on a recent unusual surgery. Dr. Goldenberg was one of a team of doctors at Danbury Hospital that changed the life of a 38-year-old woman. The team removed a 132-pound tumor in her abdomen - one of the largest tumors ever to be removed, worldwide.
Dr. Goldenberg, who is also section chief of plastic surgery at Danbury Hospital, along with Danbury Hospital’s Dr. Karl Kulikowski, vice chairman, of the anesthesia department, and gynecologic oncologist Dr. Vaagn Andikyan participated in the five-hour surgery in February of this year. In addition to the tumor removal, multiple other procedures were done at the time to restore her body structure to normal.
According to Dr. Goldenberg, the surgery was a risky one. “The huge weight of the tumor made anesthesia really dangerous. All of a sudden you are going to reduce that weight in a flash, and the cardiac system has to adjust very quickly, so there was a tremendous amount of preparation done beforehand to anticipate that kind of a problem.”
